LLStyle: Dark Floors

In today’s design landscape, dark floors are often viewed as the more traditional, less trendy hardwood shade, making spaces feel darker and heavier.

In today’s design landscape, dark floors are often viewed as the more traditional, less trendy hardwood shade, making spaces feel darker and heavier.

But we’re here to put a firm end to that notion, and make the case for using darker hardwood floors to brighten and accent your home by incorporating them as a contrast that fills your space with sophisticated dimension. With the right mix of colors, dark floors can help accent your home with coolness, coziness, and sophistication. Here are some design tips to complement deeper-hued hardwood.

Shades of White

Adding contrast is a great way to bring depth and dimension to your home’s design, whether that be through your artistic choices, wall decorations, or your flooring. To keep your home feeling bright (and to bring out the rich tones in your floors), consider shades of warm white (or other light neutrals) on your walls, in your furniture, or in your decorative accents. This basic contrast of light and dark may seem simple, but it does a wonderful job of breathing life into your space.

Consider this kitchen, accented with LL Flooring’s Lake Superior Hickory Engineered Hardwood and bright white cabinetry - with simple black fixtures and white accents in the cabinets and backsplash, the dark floors have a blank canvas to show off their unique character and depth, while the light contrast keeps the space feeling bright and airy.

Wood Contrast

We know we might be biased, but there’s really no limit to the styles and shades of wood that you can use in your home’s design. If your space is rocking darker hardwood, consider tying in light-colored wood furniture or decor for subtle, organic contrast. The shared materials bring consistency to the room’s aesthetic, while the differences in hues provide layers of warmth and complementary contrast.

Add a Pop of Color

If you’re one who gravitates toward brighter colors in your spaces, we’ve got great news for you: brighter, richer shades and patterns play wonderfully with dark-colored hardwood.

Check out the living space here, accented with bright, nature-inspired patterns and warm pops of color while staying grounded with LL’s Porter House Hickory Engineered Hardwood. With its deep brown hues and rough-hewn character, the flooring brings a hand-crafted, rustic touch to balance the room’s decor.
