3 Oscar Nominees with Major Home Design Inspiration
We love to watch Oscar-nominated movies for their glamour and storytelling of course, but the category we really tune in for is the set design—specifically inspiration we can take for our own spaces.
We love to watch Oscar-nominated movies for their glamour and storytelling of course, but the category we really tune in for is the set design—specifically inspiration we can take for our own spaces. Whether it’s a modern-day movie, a period piece, or an unexpected sci-fi, there’s always inspiration to be found that can be applied in and around your home.
Ahead of the awards show on March 12, we’re diving into our favorites among the nominees for Best Production Design, and pulling some inspiration to bring some subtle movie magic into our own homes.
Here are the nominees for LL Flooring’s Favorite Set Design:
Elvis
If it’s some quintessential mid-century inspiration you’re after, look no further than Baz Luhrmann’s biopic Elvis, which captures all the over-the-top style and glam of the 50s, 60s, and 70s in fast-paced, colorful fashion. Between the costumes and set design at Graceland and beyond, there’s endless decor inspo to be taken here—but don’t worry, you don’t have to go all-out to get some fun, mid-century vibes in your home.
Last year, Priscilla Presley walked Architectural Digest through the many themes and colors used in Graceland’s many rooms, ranging from simple American ranch-style decor to flamboyant Baroque inspired by luxury hotels of the era.
To take some pages from Elvis’ book, consider committing to one theme in a room, whether that be with color, style of decor, or one piece of art that everything else is designed around.
You may not be able to charge for admission Graceland-style, but building a space around a certain theme or piece of inspiration can result in a fun, unique room that feels exciting and specific to you.
Babylon
Based around the chaos, decadence, and debauchery of 1920s Hollywood, Damien Chazelle’s Babylon is a hectic watch, to say the least. But if you’re watching for pure design inspo, there’s a deep well of traditional “Roaring 20s” style and colorful palettes to draw from in this movie, especially as more classic elements like high-gloss wood floors are making a comeback in the design community (see: LL Flooring’s Dream Home Heard County Hickory High Gloss Laminate).
To give fresh life to some old-school design elements, consider mixing vintage pieces of art and furniture with modern, organic finishes like hardwood, stone, or clay to create an aesthetic that feels both classic and timeless.
Avatar: The Way of Water
Hear us out: although there may be no actual homes or stylish buildings of note in this movie, Avatar: The Way of Water makes a highly convincing argument for incorporating more house plants into our spaces. They instantly bring vivid, organic color and breathe more life into any room, and with some imagination you can feel like you’re living in a mini-Pandora all year long. We’re sold!
