Ok, so you're a DIYer who's ready to dive into a flooring installation. Good for you! But, where do you start? Once you've selected your wood flooring, you need to ensure you have the tools and accessories to get the job done. We're here to tell you what tools you'll need for your flooring installation so you'll be fully prepared for your project.

What Tools Do I Need for Installing Flooring?

The tools required for your flooring installation depend on the type of flooring you selected, so check out your Warranty, Installation, and Care guide for specifics. But, you can expect to need some of these essential tools for flooring to successfully complete your installation.

  • Saws and flooring cutters allow you to cut your boards to fit your space.
  • Flooring nailers allow you to install wood flooring with specialized fasteners.
  • Use the right trowels to ensure your glue-down installation is successful.
  • Moisture meters help you determine when your boards have acclimated and are ready for installation.

What Flooring Accessories Are Needed for Installation?

Your hardwood flooring installation may also call for some accessories to make your job easier. First, consider underlayment, which can serve as a moisture barrier, reduce noise, and provide thermal insulation—making your floor more comfortable to live on. We strongly recommend an underlayment for floating installations, and we have many options available.

Vents, grills, and registers add a finishing touch once your floors are installed. They fit neatly into your air duct openings and are available in an array of finishes, making it easy to find one that coordinates with your new floors. Transitions and moldings frame your new floors and cover natural expansion and contraction to ensure your installation looks seamless. You can find baseboards that cover the joint between the wall and the floor and quarter round and shoe molding that covers the expansion space between the flooring and the wall. These moldings and trims come in many finishes for easy coordination with your flooring.
