Can I Install Vinyl Plank Flooring Over Concrete?

Applying vinyl over concrete requires the right installation method. Learn more about installing vinyl plank flooring on concrete.

Yes, you can install vinyl planks over concrete—but some conditions need to be met. First, ensure that the surface is flat, clean, and dry. The vinyl plank may flex and sound hollow if the concrete is uneven.

You'll also need a moisture barrier to prevent water and high alkalinity from disturbing the planks. Although vinyl flooring is waterproof, excess moisture with high alkalinity under the planks can cause damage to the structure.

Depending on the room type, you may also want to consider an underlayment with thermal properties. For instance, basements can benefit from the extra insulation—especially in colder months. Vinyl is resilient enough to handle the demands of most rooms—including home gyms, kids' playrooms, and offices. Once you've decided how you will transform your space, check out our LL Style guide for inspiration.
