We know that the concept of installing new floors in your home can be incredibly daunting— after all, not everyone is a DIYer and sometimes it’s best to put the job in the hands of the pros who know how to do it right every time. LL Flooring is proud to partner with a long roster of flooring pros across the country to help our customers get their floors installed right and looking great.

One of these pros is Joseph Colangelo of Colangelo Brothers, a family-owned flooring installation company based in Utica, New York. We caught up with Joseph to learn all about his business and how he helps his customers.

LL: What kind of work does your business do and how did you get started?

Joseph Colangelo: Colangelo Brothers is a flooring installation business. We have three brothers employed as installers and my wife handles the media and advertising side of the business.

We started our business in the summer of 2015. As young teens our step-father, who was a flooring installer, would take us out on small jobs to help carry materials, tools, take out the trash. He taught us the trade.

As adults, my brothers and I figured out that we are not white collar workers. We always talked about starting a business, but never really got around to it. After helping other installers with their projects, we decided to start taking smaller flooring installation side jobs. As the years went on, we met other installers who were doing bigger jobs, commercial jobs, and we used their business model and work ethic as the example for what we wanted to do and where we wanted to be.

Today, we do a 65-35% split with residential vs. commercial jobs.

LL: What do you love about installing floors?

Joseph Colangelo: We enjoy seeing the transformation of the properties that we are working on, and we love the finished product when the customer walks in to the room for the first time and says, “wow!”

LL: For someone new to installing floors — what’s the most important thing to know, and what’s the hardest part?

Joseph Colangelo: The most important thing is never stop learning. The hardest thing is getting started.

LL: What floors do you love to work with and why?

Joseph Colangelo: We like working with hardwood and engineered hardwood. We believe it is the highest quality flooring, along with tile. When it is finished it looks beautiful.

LL: How do you help your customers find and select the right floor for their job?

Joseph Colangelo: I give my customers the rundown on what they are getting for their money. Each product has a number of grades and qualities to it, along with its own specifications.

We are deliberate with being as up-front as possible. And, I tell everyone to shop, shop, shop, shop. You have to know the market value for what it is that you are asking to have done.

LL: What’s next for Colangelo Brothers?

Joseph Colangelo: We are never satisfied with our work. We see every square inch up close of the floors we install. We were told a long time ago that the largest room in the world is the room for improvement.

We can always do better.

Thanks Joseph, for being an LL Pro Partner and helping people in Central New York install their floors!
