Holiday dinner tables can run the gamut when it comes to style, and each table can be unique to a family’s own traditions, but there are typically a few recurring characters: the antique dish set gifted from someone’s great grandmother; an ivory lace tablecloth; perhaps a seasonal centerpiece that’s making its annual two-day appearance before being relegated back to the shadows of storage.

If your tablescape is getting a little tired, try mixing it up for the holidays this year. Whether you’re in need of a full reset or maybe just a couple new ideas to mix in with the classic mainstays, we’ve got some tips and ideas to dress up your table this holiday season.

Classy, Not Kitschy

Holiday decor can have strong ties to family traditions, which often means that style takes a backseat to sentimental value. There’s nothing wrong with proudly displaying your full set of turkey decor, or continuing to add new houses to your Christmas village, but it’s important to remember balance so that your house doesn’t start to feel like the inside of a holiday gift shop.

Your dinner table is a perfect place to practice warm, classic elegance with your decor. With so much space reserved for dishes, it’s key to make the most of the space while optimizing it for easy conversation (i.e. get rid of anything oversized that blocks the view across the table). Focus on creating a cozy atmosphere with candlelight, natural elements, and simple gold or silver accents.

Foraged Festivity

Whether you’re a novice or veteran holiday host, it’s always a great time to reassess your table decor. And when it comes to trends, nature never goes out of style, especially when it comes to holiday decor.

If you’re looking to impart a little warm fall color this Thanksgiving, consider collecting some prime autumn leaves and pressing them between wax paper with a hot iron—voila, you’ve got some attractive and unique DIY table accents to scatter over (or in lieu of) a table runner. To keep the atmosphere comfortable and welcoming, work in some gold candlesticks and warm fall tones through your table linens—think cream, rust, burgundy, and mahogany.

For winter holidays, continue the natural accents with inclusion of evergreens, like pine branches, pine cones, and rosemary for added fragrance. Depending on your preference, silver or gold accents play well with any natural decor, and as always, candles are always a must. (Tip: when it comes to the dinner table, candles are best left unscented.)

Whatever your holiday decor style may be, the only rule is to build a table that lends itself to conversation and connection with the friends and family you hold dear. By creating a cozy atmosphere for your guests, you set the stage for a memorable holiday filled with cheer and—barring any kitchen disasters—some delicious food.
