Summertime Spruce-Up
After a long winter, and an even longer pandemic, we’ve had a lot of time cooped up in our living spaces, and have many ideas about how to change them. Here’s a rundown of summer projects to freshen up your home for the summer (and improve its functionality for years to come.)
Refresh your look, and keep your home in tip-top condition this season..
You’ve probably finished all your springtime projects in the yard. The herbs are in the ground and the lawn is coming along nicely. Summer is when you should turn your attention to the rest of the house. After a long winter, and an even longer pandemic, we’ve had a lot of time cooped up in our living spaces, and have many ideas about how to change them. Here’s a rundown of summer projects to freshen up your home for the summer (and improve its functionality for years to come.)
Lighter Curtains, Cushions and Pillows
You don’t wear the same clothing year-round, so why should your windows? Heavy drapes are great for keeping the winter chill at bay, but summer calls for fabrics that feel more breezy and light. Coordinate the textures of your main rooms around lighter linens that catch the sunlight — start with the curtains, then expand into place settings on the table and cushions for the chairs.
Outdoor Mood Lighting
The right lighting can immediately give you an outdoor gathering space where you didn’t have one before. With the price of building materials skyrocketing, this might not be the right year to build a new deck. But if you string some edison bulbs above any outdoor space, or install smart lighting around pathways, you can still enjoy the summer nights in style.
Statement Storage
Every home needs smart storage, but think about it as a way to show off your passions and lean into your collections. If your kitchen needs of some organization, construct divider shelves full of cookbooks or a pot rack to hang all your cast iron. If you don’t have enough space for your clothes, peg railings make for a stylish way to display your dresses and outerwear.
Windows
What better way to welcome the good weather than with a window upgrade? This is the one major purchase you won’t regret as a homeowner — you can expect to recoup your entire investment; you’ll increase your home’s energy efficiency, and the right window can jump start a brand new interior design.
Energy Audit
While you’re updating the look of your home for summer, it’s a good time to check on the performance of the home itself. Your AC will be running at full blast for a while, so call your electrical company to see if they offer an energy audit. A trained professional will examine your home’s thermal envelope, mapping out where heated or cooled air escapes, and develop customizable solutions to help your home be more energy efficient.
Or begin with this DIY Home Energy Audit.
