Change Your Wall Color, and 3D Room Designer: Two Design Apps We Love

In the same way that you can “try on” a new outfit or pair of glasses with the help of a smartphone app, it’s now possible to do the same thing for your entire living space — visualizing new colors, finishes, appliances, and decor, all without having to move a single chair or drive to the store to pick up color samples.

Like most consumer-facing industries, adopting new technologies has revolutionized the world of interior design. In the same way that you can “try on” a new outfit or pair of glasses with the help of a smartphone app, it’s now possible to do the same thing for your entire living space — visualizing new colors, finishes, appliances, and decor, all without having to move a single chair or drive to the store to pick up color samples.

Here are two helpful digital tools that make imagining home design easier than ever.

Houzz

If you want to redesign a space but have no idea where to start, look into the Houzz app, an encyclopedic collection of interior design ideas. Start by browsing over 20 million high resolution photos of interiors and exteriors that you can save, share, and sketch notes on.

If you’re interested in any products in those photos, the app’s visual recognition technology will find it for you among a database of over 5 million products and materials.

If you want to see the products in your own space, the My Room 3D feature will pluck those items out of your cart and arrange them in your room in augmented reality. The app also contains expert articles, verified product reviews, and links to home design professionals in your area — from architects to contractors and designers — who can help bring your project to life.

Extremely colorful living room with yellow, red, green, even a blue surfboard...looks great with Copper Ridge Oak vinyl plank flooring.

ColorSnap visualizer by Sherwin-Williams

Make painting swatches on your walls a thing of the past with the help of the ColorSnap Visualizer from Sherwin-Williams.

Upload a photo or use augmented reality to try hundreds of shades on your walls in a heartbeat.

The app has a useful day-night toggle so users can see how a particular shade looks under different light sources. It can also match the colors from any photo in your camera roll to the equivalent Sherwin-Williams color.

Pinterest users will love how this app interfaces with their pins — simply select a photo from your Pinterest board and this app will recognize its entire color palette.
