Underlayment is a thin layer of material that lies between your flooring and your subfloor. Many types of flooring recommend underlayment is installed to ensure superior performance. Here's your guide to the many additional benefits that underlayment could bring to your flooring installation.

Underlayment for Smooth Surfaces

Underlayment provides a new, clean surface for flooring installations. Some subfloors, such as those made of concrete or located in older homes, could have bumps or dents that make them uneven and therefore unsuitable as a base. Adding a thin layer of underlayment can smooth out minor imperfections, creating a flat surface for your new flooring.

Stability and Support

When you add underlayment to your flooring system, you'll also add stability and support for your new flooring. It also helps to cushion and support the joints of your new flooring, and you might even find that you get a longer life from your new flooring with underlayment installed.

Insulation

Adding underlayment to subfloors creates an insulating barrier with thermal properties that gives you additional comfort underfoot.

Noise Reduction

Thanks to its acoustical properties, underlayment can also reduce noise. In multiple-story homes, noise reduction can reduce the sound of footsteps and even the transfer of sound to the rooms down below. To find the best underlayment for noise reduction, check the product's sound rating specifications, such as Impact Insulation Class (IIC) and Sound Transmission Class (STC). Generally, the higher these ratings, the more efficient the underlayment is at reducing sound.

Superior Comfort

A cushioned layer between your subfloor and flooring can improve the comfort you feel when walking through your home. Some underlayment materials absorb pressure or add padding, providing a softer feel as you're walking. Underlayment comes in a breadth of materials, each offering different properties to meet your unique flooring needs.

Whether you want to prioritize sound reduction, additional thermal properties, or, stability you can find a suitable underlayment from LL Flooring.
