Perimeter expansion gap or spacing; 
It is understood that wood flooring will expand and contract in relation to the in-door humidity and temperature levels. Allow this normal movement in all installations by providing the recommended side or perimeter expansion gap or spacing per product. In most cases the perimeter expansion gap is related to the thickness of the new flooring. For example ½" thick flooring will require ½" expansion gap. Perimeter spacing not only allows for seasonal expansion but also provides airflow. Positive airflow reduces the occurrence of side-wicking or moisture transference to the flooring materials. This is especially beneficial for floorings placed at or near exterior foundation walls.

Center expansions or breaks;
In addition to Perimeter expansion, Center expansions are recommended in floating floor installations exceeding predetermined spans of liner feet. Each floating floor manufacture has their own specific predetermined span limit, so it's important to read the manufactures installation guide before installation. A connected area is defined as all room areas using the same flooring, connected. Expansion breaks allow heavy floating floors collective and seasonal expansion thereby reducing the occurrence of buckling of the floor. Breaks can be placed in doorways, between rooms or hallways and can be hidden or maintained by using basic T- type expansion moldings.
