A Buyer's Guide to Peel-and-Stick Vinyl Flooring

Learn why peel-and-stick vinyl is a good choice for DIY-friendly flooring. It's strong, waterproof, and comes in a multitude of designs.

Peel-and-stick vinyl is an affordable and versatile flooring product. It is sometimes called self-stick flooring. It comes in different thicknesses, widths, and lengths, just like those offered by other flooring products such as wood and tile. It’s one of the easiest flooring types to install and can offer hardy wear-and-tear protection.

It also handles water well, with its innate resistance to moisture. But one of its best features is the easy DIY peel-and-stick installation method. Let's take a closer look at this product.

Peel-and-Stick Vinyl Installation

Peel-and-stick vinyl is just what it sounds like. This vinyl comes with a pre-applied adhesive, so all you need for this installation is a smooth, clean, and dry subfloor. If there’s too much moisture, dirt, or debris, they will interfere with the adhesive. To apply, you peel the protective layer off the adhesive and apply the vinyl to your floor. For shaping the vinyl, use a utility knife and straightedge ruler to cut your vinyl to size and to shape around corners and angles in walls and cabinets. A heavy floor roller helps to apply extra pressure to the vinyl to ensure a firm, flat bond between the subfloor and vinyl.

Styles of Peel-and-Stick Vinyl

One of the noteworthy features of peel-and-stick vinyl is its range of styles. From realistic patterns to unique designs, vinyl has a lot to offer in terms of colors, shades, and textures. It’s also easier to arrange vinyl in eye-catching patterns such as herringbone, weave, and quarter-turn than it is to create patterns out of hardwood or other floorings. For the more adventurous, mixing and matching distinctive styles creates striking designs.

At LL Flooring, we offer a variety of peel-and-stick style options.

Get the Look You Want

We offer both stone- and wood-look vinyl that are very realistic and make it difficult to tell at a glance that it is vinyl. Designers achieve this realistic look by changing the color, texture, and pattern to mimic natural materials. They also work to minimize repeating patterns, which can make it obvious that it's not natural wood or stone. This, along with the type of cut, gives the vinyl that wood or stone look. For wood patterns and textures, manufacturers cut the vinyl into "planks" of varied sizes. This helps the vinyl look more like real wood, manufactured, or hardwood flooring. They cut stone-look vinyl into tile-sized squares, again to mimic actual cuts of stone.

The different options that give peel-and-stick vinyl its unique looks mean it can also mimic specific wood species, such as Red Oak or Pine. This helps when you’re looking for that perfect color and grain to complement your room design.

Specifications

We offer a variety of sizes to choose from. We most often stock peel-and-stick vinyl with the average width of 6 in. - 7.9 in., and our thicknesses range from 1.0 mm - 4.9 mm.

Choosing Your Vinyl Plank Wear Layer

The wear layer is the top coating that protects your vinyl while allowing its design to show through. This top layer, sometimes made of urethane, protects your floors from common use, scratches, and scuffs. The thickness of the wear layer influences the vinyl’s longevity. Thicker wear layers provide more protection against everyday use and come with longer limited warranties. LL Flooring offers wear layers of .15mm to .5mm.

Things to Consider With Peel And Stick Vinyl

When choosing your peel-and-stick vinyl, it’s important to think about the distinct elements of your space and design. You might find it helpful to ask yourself the following questions:

What color, look, and pattern will look best in your room?

How much foot traffic will your vinyl need to accommodate?

    Do you have pets?

Is your subfloor in the right condition for vinyl?

Why Choose Peel-and-Stick Vinyl

If you haven’t considered this type of flooring, now’s the time to think about how it could be the best choice for you. Not only is it hardwearing and waterproof, but it also comes in a wide selection of styles and sizes. It’s one of the easiest flooring types to install. LL Flooring’s range of peel-and-stick vinyl comes with a limited warranty too. And above all, it's an affordable option to consider.
