Picking a Color in 2023: Does Your Design Palette Need Some Green?

Fresh, creative ways to integrate shades of green into your design scheme.

Published on May 26, 2023

For the last few years, the color green has been taking the interior design world by storm. From walls to cabinetry to furniture, people have gone wild for soothing shades of sage, evergreen, teal, pistachio, lime, olive and more, applying them to both the interiors and exteriors of the home to give it a natural, organic feel that plays well with virtually any style or era of home.

Shades of green swept the 2023 Color of the Year selections across several of the most prominent paint brands. The trend has even birthed its own devoted internet following, with TikTok mentions of #greeninterior surpassing 9 million views and Google searches for 'green decor' seeing a 270 percent increase since the end of 2022.

If you’re interested in going green, here are some ways to incorporate some different shades into your space to create rooms that feel calm, organic, and vibrant all at once.

Paint it Green

From soft shades of sage to deep, moody shades of emerald or teal, the possibilities for color pairings are endless if you’re interested in painting your space in green. It all depends on what look you’re going for—if you want a calm, peaceful space, opt for a lighter shade of sage, pistachio, or mint and use earth-toned furnishings for a natural look, or bold pops of darker color for an accent.

If it's a cozy, moody atmosphere you’re after, go with a rich forest green or blue-green—the look can be played up with dark or colorful accents, or lightened up with neutral, light-colored accents like wood or natural textiles.

Keep it Natural

Virtually every shade of green—save for maybe neon green, which we do not endorse for the home—can be found somewhere in nature, as evidenced by many of their names (sage, lime, pistachio, forest green, the list goes on). So it’s only, well, natural that organic accents and decor pieces perfectly complement any green shade, as they do out in the wild.

Pairing green decor and walls with natural hardwood flooring and wood accents is a great way to instill some organic, grounding balance that will stay timeless for many years to come.

A selection with slightly warmer tones like LL Flooring’s Character White Oak Solid Hardwood pairs well with darker, richer shades of green, while a lighter flooring like the Champagne Beach White Oak Distressed Engineered Hardwood works with pale shades of blue-green.
